4 Oily Skin Myths

We’ve all heard them: “old wives tales” about what should or shouldn’t be done for oily skin. We asked our Cosmetologist to bust these myths wide open! Here’s what we learned:

Myth 1

  • Oil can be controlled by striping the skin with harsh ingredients
  • FALSE! Stripping the skin of oil can cause more oil production. Why? The skin produces oil as a barrier function and is needed to protect it.

Myth 2

  • Sunscreen increases oil production
  • FALSE! There are many formulations that are oil free or actually contain oil-absorbing microsponges for sun protection.

Myth 3

  • A little sun exposure is ideal for drying the skin
  • FALSE! Sun exposure is never good for the skin. The sun does dry the skin, which results in ever more oil production.

Myth 4

  • You cannot control oily skin
  • FALSE! Oily skin is just a condition and can be treated just like any other condition. Finding the correct products will help control oil and balance the skin.

What sort of myths have you heard about skincare? Leave them in the comments section below and we’ll get to the bottom of them for you!
