How to Add That Soft Diffused Effect to the Eyes

Having the right tool for the job!

Getting a very soft and natural look with your eye shadow is a little more involved than just applying a single color for a pop and walking out the door. To truly get that runway “natural” look that makes your eyes look flawlessly contoured, you have to do just a bit more work. One thing that you’ll need to nail this look is a very softly diffused crease color, which helps to offset your brow bone and eye color without looking too harsh.  You will also need a good crease eyeshadow brush.

You can buy great eye shadows all you want, but without the right tools, you can’t get that airbrushed finish you’re looking for. In this case, you’ll need the right makeup brush to get the look you’re after. There are many different types of eye makeup brushes out there, but for this look, a crease brush is going to be the best tool in your kit. But how do you choose the right crease brush and what it is used for anyway?

Here’s what you need to know about the pro Crease Eyeshadow Brush:

What Is the pro Crease Brush?

This is a brush that has longer, soft bristles in a slightly rounded shape for very soft blending. It is made of very easy-to-clean synthetic fibers, a double-crimped copper ferrule, and a solid wood handle. It is designed for applying diffused color to the crease of your eyes or for blending contouring products, concealers, and eye shadows.

Why Use the pro Crease Eyeshadow Brush?

There are several reasons why this brush is best for getting the very soft and natural look you want. Here are just a few:

  • The longer bristles are perfect for blending with lots of movement to really diffuse color and help create softer transitions between color. If you’ve ever struggled with color settling into your crease and looking harsh after an hour or two, this brush will take care of that problem completely.
  • The solid wood handle takes the work out of blending. The weight from the handle is all you need to get a good blend – no need to press down, just lightly blend.
  • It works with all makeup types including powder, cream, liquid, and mineral shadows. This means you don’t have to have a different brush every time you want to try something new and it lets you try new trends when you’re feeling bold.
  • This brush is large enough to be used in other areas of the face as well. It can be used to apply concealer to acne, to contour and blend the sides of the nose, and to blend the color on the outer V of the eyes.

What to Look for When Buying Crease Eyeshadow Brushes

When buying makeup brushes, especially those that will be near your eyes, there are some basic things to look for in a quality brush. You need to make sure your brush has very soft fibers that doesn’t damage the delicate skin of your eyelid, but also that they are going to be durable – shedding fibers create streaks in your color. You also want to make sure that the brush is easy to clean so that you don’t have to worry about bacteria causing eye infections or irritation.

The pro Crease Eyeshadow Brush meets all of these criteria. The synthetic fiber is soft and easy to clean and the double-crimped ferrule keeps it all in place. With the proper use and care, this brush can be your go-to for years.

How to Use the pro Crease Eyeshadow Brush

The most popular use of this brush is to apply and blend the base color of shadow into the crease of the eyelid for a very soft, natural finish. Here’s how to accomplish that:

Start by dabbing and swirling the brush into your eye shadow product and tap off any excess product. Then start with the bristles at the outer corner of the crease of the eye. Blend back and forth like a windshield wiper, working from the outer corner to the inner corner, and back.

Next, use a small circular motion to blend the product you just put on into your crease. If you need to create an even lighter look, you can combine the impact of this brush with a fluffier blending brush such as the pro Tapered Blending Brush to get rid of any harsh edges at all. Repeat these steps when you blend the outer V of the eye or the contour on the sides of the nose and you’ll find that this Crease Brush offers you plenty of versatility.

“Crease brush size is a matter of personal preference. If you have hooded peepers like me (check out my eye makeup tips), opt for a brush that’s quite tapered or domed so you can maneuver it above your normal crease or “hood”to create the illusion of depth. This triumvirate set had me in mind. I use the black and white crease brush interchangeably to build a higher crease, then use the fluffier tapered brush to blend and/ or add dimensional shade.”  The Fabzilla

Caring for the pro Crease Brush

Caring for the pro Crease Eyeshadow Brush is easy. After each use, tap out any excess product and spray or apply some of your favorite daily brush cleanser, then wipe clean. Once a week, perform a deeper clean by following these steps:

  • Hold the brush upside down under running water. Don’t let the water touch the handle or the ferrule! This can cause the bristles to shed.
  • Squeeze out the bristles until the water runs clear and then squeeze out the excess water.
  • Put a small drop of mild hand soap or facial cleanser in your palm along with some olive oil and still holding the brush upside down under the running water, massage the bristles into your palm.
  • Rinse out all of the cleanser. Squeeze out the excess water. Dry the brush with a clean towel so that no water drips down into the ferrule.
  • Lay the brush on the counter with the bristles hanging off the edge so that they will air dry in a natural shape or allow to air dry overnight hanging upside down.

That’s all it takes to keep your brush in great shape.

Quick Tips from the Pros

We have two quick tips for using this brush that our makeup pros love:

  • Did you apply too much product to any part of your face? Use this brush to quickly diffuse the look! This can work for random spots of blush, concealer, or any other product.
  • You can also use this brush with crisper looks as well. Use beauty tape to create a very precise wing and then use this brush to blend out the wing for a smokier look before removing the tape.
