How To Trim Your Own Bangs

We’ve all been there. We’re prepping for a day or night out and realize we should’ve made that salon appointment sooner. Our bangs are hanging at that weird length, giving the impression of a “Cousin It” in training. What to do? There’s no time to visit your stylist and pushing your hair out of your eyes/face all day/night doesn’t sound like an appealing idea. Fear not. Trimming your own bangs may seem a little scary at first, but it’s totally do-able. Before you start, check out this post on the best bangs for your face shape and then get started! Here are a few simple steps to guide you through it.

  1. Gather the right tools. You will need a pair of haircutting shears and a comb. Comb the hair to the front of the face and to the way you want them to look. Make sure the hair is fully dry, if they are cut wet, there is a greater chance they will shrink which can make them too short.
  2. Next, begin to point cut the bangs (hold the shears at a perpendicular angle) and begin to trim. Do not cut the bangs straight across, even if straight across bangs are desired, point cut. This will create a soft, natural look around the face. Start by trimming a little bit, you can always trim off more.
  3. Lastly, check the cut. Run your fingers through your bangs and be sure they look natural and even. If there are any uneven spots, carefully trim them away.
