Summer Travel Tips for Makeup and Skin Care

Going On A Trip?

For most of us, nothing is better than summer. It means warmer weather, a break from school, a more relaxed dress code… and of course, a road trip! Whether you are taking a family vacation, flying overseas, or just hitting the road with friends, there are so many ways to enjoy traveling in the summer. If you love makeup the way we do, or you just want to bring along your skin care items so you can maintain your youthful glow, travel can present a challenge.  We have your travel tips for makeup right here.

In addition to figuring out how to pack your items so they stay safe, you also have to ask yourself what you really need. You don’t want to end up packing a whole bag just for makeup and skin care – although most of us probably could if we brought our whole collection. What about airplanes? Do you know what is allowed and what isn’t? What is better in your carry on, and what can you save space with by stowing in your suitcase? These are all questions we’ve heard before. These are our best travel tips for makeup and skin care items this summer

How to Pack Skin Care or Cosmetics for Travel

Packing your makeup or skin care items is all about two things: protecting the items from breaking while traveling, and paring down your items so you don’t have as much to bring with you.

travel tips for makeupThe first of many travel tips for makeup is protecting it. Many of those things come in flimsy plastic palettes, glass bottles or jars that could shatter, or have loose caps that could break or pop off, leaving your pricey products all over your suitcase. We’ll talk about airline regulations a little further down, but if you can bring makeup and skin care in your carry-on, it is much easier to prevent suitcase accidents from happening.

However, regardless of where you pack the items, there are still ways to make them a little safer, such as:

  • Wrap things like palettes that could shatter in clothing, towels, or even bubble wrap or newspaper if you prefer. If you have small pressed powders that you want to protect inside the container, try adding a cotton round on top of the powder before closing the compact. Cling wrap is also surprisingly protective, and wrapping something in a few layers can add plenty of cushion.
  • Secure the lids on things like lip glosses and mascaras with rubber bands. Just place it lengthwise, going around the top of the lid and the bottom of the container, to help keep everything in place even on a bumpy ride. Anything that you think may leak at all should be in a secure air-tight zippered baggie. This includes things like shampoos, makeup remover, cleansing oils, and so on.
  • Another way you can prevent things like loose powder from getting all over the place is to tape the pot or jar closed. You can even put tape inside the container on the sifters, to keep the powder from getting all over the inside of the jar itself.
  • If you have something very pricey in a glass jar or bottle, consider putting just what you’ll need into a smaller plastic container. For example, pricey foundations can be turned into easy travel companions with a travel-sized plastic container for shampoo.
Now is the time to break out all those samples you’ve been collecting. Protect your makeup by leaving it at home and bring your sample packets or sample-sized containers instead.

Now that you have some ideas for protecting your makeup, let’s move on to the harder part: cutting down what you’ll bring along!  We hope these travel tips for makeup are helpful.

Minimizing Your Routine: What’s a must and what can you live without?

As beauty junkies, it’s hard to minimize what you’ll bring with you sometimes. Maybe you could get away with having just one lipstick on vacation, but what if you want a daytime and a nighttime look? What if you have a particular look in mind for one big city you’ll be stopping in, but a different look you want to wear to the rural area you’ll be visiting after? There are so many choices that it can be easy to end up tossing all your makeup and skin care into the suitcase. Here’s how to pare it down.

First, don’t skimp on the skin care items like sunscreen and moisturizer. If you do pare down your makeup to the basics, you’ll want your skin to be glowing. Second, always think in terms of multitasking. Use a tinted moisturizer or BB cream rather than a moisturizer and a foundation. Try a multi-stick for your cheeks and lips, rather than bringing a powder blush that could shatter.

For the most part, it’s best to develop a single go-to look for travel, and pack just what you need for that look. If you are the type of person who likes to have more than one look, consider adding just one or two details to punch up the go-to look. For example, your go-to look may include:

  • Tinted moisturizer
  • Concealer
  • Bronzer
  • Blush
  • Eye liner
  • Mascara
  • Nude lip

More Minimizing Your Routine Tips

In order to take that look to the next level, add an extra lipstick in your favorite color, and a cheek highlighter for some serious glam. You can also use the cheek highlight to add some shine to your brow bone and the inner corner of your eye, so just these two extra products can really make your look completely new. Or, if you can rock the nude lip anywhere, add a small eye shadow palette for extra glam days. The ways you can customize your kit are endless, but if you keep in mind multi-tasking products are key, and to use one or two extra details to build on a basic look, you’ll have a great minimalist kit for traveling.

When building your basic look, consider what would go best with the outfits you’ve packed. You may be tempted to pack a basic smoky eye, but your outfits are more suited to a “no makeup” makeup look. Coordinate your makeup to what you’ve already packed to make it even easier to pare down.

Another thing to consider about packing a minimalist makeup kit is to swap things that could be hard to travel with for easier options. For example, a setting powder could get everywhere in your bag. Leave it at home and bring blotting papers to handle excess oil instead.

Remember not to pack anything that could be affected by the weather where you’ll be, or by changes in altitude if you are flying. And think about how the weather may impact what you want to wear. Don’t bring a heavy full-coverage concealer if you think you’ll be sweaty the entire time you are visiting the beach. Opt for a lighter tinted moisturizer – and even go a step further and make it with SPF for some skin protection.

Multi-tasking Tools Make It Easier to Pack

That covers the makeup, but what about the tools? If you are the kind of person who uses many brushes in your daily routine, you are probably wondering just what you can live without. First, if you travel frequently, it may be a good idea to invest in dual-ended brushes so that you can bring multiple items without taking up so much space. But if you are working with what you’ve got, it’s all about paring it down to the basics and multi-tasking.

Bring one brush for cream face products, one for powder face products, and one for eye shadow blending. Don’t forget that your fingers are excellent makeup applicators, for many things. They can apply eye shadow to the lid, they can apply highlighter to the cheekbone, they can blend concealer, and so much more. And you don’t have to worry about packing these!

One final tip for paring down your makeup collection for travel is to consider how other products can be used in new ways. While there are some things that are formulated for certain parts of the face, at the end of the day, most makeup is just pigmented powder or paint for your face. You can use your bronzer as a brown eye shadow to define your eyes, or your blush as a pink eye shadow for a fun, girly look. Also, you can use your nude or pink lipstick as a cream blush. You can use an eyebrow crayon as an eyeliner, and vice versa. Eye shadow can be brow powder. Concealer works as eye shadow primer, and your moisturizer can stand in as a face primer in a pinch.

Travel Tips for Makeup – What Is a Must?

What beauty products are a must to take on your trip? Honestly, that depends on your style. The only true “musts” are sunscreen and moisturizer, to keep your skin healthy and in good condition. Everything else is all about what you want to wear when on vacation. You can go makeup-free and have a great time without it; just bring your favorite mascara and lipstick to give yourself a little color and definition; or bring a full face with multi-taskers like multi-sticks and face products that double as eye shadows. As long as you are protecting your skin, you choose what counts as a must.

Airline Regulations and Travel Tips for Makeup and Skin Care When Flying

If you are driving on your trip, you don’t need to worry so much about what you bring with you. It’s all about your comfort and preference. But if you are flying, you do have airline rules to work with in terms of what you can bring. You don’t want your favorite makeup or skin care items to be confiscated at security, so here’s what you need to know.

First, ditch anything in an aerosol can. The rules for aerosol cans change frequently, and in most cases, you aren’t allowed to have them. Aerosol means anything canned under pressure, like hairspray.

Liquids regulations vary by airline, but most only allow a small number of liquid items in your bag. For example, most airlines require that all liquid items be under three ounces. Many liquid foundations are sold in one-ounce, or 1.7-ounce bottles, so you don’t have too much to worry about, but don’t bring your full-sized moisturizer along.

If you are wondering what would be best to take on the airplane itself to touch up your style when you arrive, before you can get into your suitcase, most beauty gurus suggest bringing your lipstick and your blush. Getting off a long plane ride can leave you feeling a bit lifeless, and because of the change in altitude, most people get dehydrated during an airplane flight. This means your lips will likely be dry, and your skin probably won’t be too oily. Adding a fresh bit of color to your cheeks and lips can make you feel more alive, and you’ll get back some much-needed hydration if you go for a creamy formula. Use a multi-stick or something similar to cut down on what you need even more.

But again, this all comes down to your personal preference. If you feel more confident with touched-up mascara, bring that in your carry-on. Bring a few blotting papers if you don’t want to go anywhere without some just in case. If you tend to get very dry skin, flying can be even harder on you, so consider bringing a travel-sized moisturizer.

Be sure you do research on what your specific airline requires when it comes to items before you pack.

The last thing you can do to make traveling with makeup and skin care easier is to get the right kind of travel bag.
